My studio, Blue Chair Press, is located in the historic Advocate Press Building
in the sunny redwood hamlet of Blue Lake in Humboldt County, California. The
large space allows me to embrace more than just the printing and book-making
with which I started, and the good vibes from the original business (in a
century-old building) remind me to keep things simple (despite the computer and
accessories in the back room). Book-making is a fantastic combination of art,
craft, and text, and is immensely satisfying. It always surprises me when I
take a detour into another medium. Printing - either block prints on the
etching press or digital images from the computer - is the natural direction
I have taken since college, but the art dolls tend to barge in without an
invitation, demanding attention. (Each one comes with its own story, though,
so they are not that far removed form the books.)
Blue Chair Press books are in the special collections of universities and public
libraries in the USA and Canada, and in private collections. Dada Dolls have gone
out into the world without as much as a phone call home, except for Ophelia, who
sends occasional postcards...
